Religious Education, Security Challenges, and National Development in Nigeria

Abstract
This paper examined the relationship between religious education, security challenges, and national
development in Nigeria. Through a comprehensive examination of various facets of religious
education, the paper investigates the nexus between national development and the role of religious
education in Nigeria. The recognition of religious freedom as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution
provides a foundational perspective, emphasising the importance of accommodating diverse religious
beliefs in the country. The study begins by delving into the landscape of religious education in both
public and private schools, evaluating their contributions to Nigeria’s development. Next, it examines
the impact of religious education on national unity, moral values, economic development, and political
stability. Further, the role of religious education in promoting social cohesion and national identity is
explored, emphasizing its significance in preparing students for the challenges of a globalised world.
The paper advocates for the promotion of intercultural and interfaith dialogue, aiming to foster
critical thinking, empathy, and a deep understanding of diverse religious and cultural practices.
While recognising the positive aspects of religious education, the study also scrutinises its limitations
in contributing to national development. Overall, the research proposed strategies to enhance the
effectiveness of religious education in Nigeria and the potential strategies for improving the country’s
religious education policies.
